Calm the Farm
Simple Ways to Find Your Reset
The home stretch of 2026 is here.
Sports grand finals, the last term of school, Christmas planning, family holidays, final exams and everything else that seems to pile into the final few months of the year. Sometimes it can feel like there’s barely a moment to stop and breathe.
Finding calm in a busy world isn’t always easy. If you’re getting to the end of the day wondering whether you actually stopped for a moment, you’re probably not alone.
So, before the end of year chaos really gets going, here are a few simple, free ways to create little moments of calm for yourself and your family.
1. Just add water
It could be a cool glass of water, a shower or bath, running through the sprinkler or heading to the beach for a swim.
As the weather warms up, water can be a wonderfully simple way to pause, reset and change the pace of the moment. And if there’s an inner lava monster making an appearance, sometimes a splash of cool water is exactly what the situation needs.
2. Put on some music and move
There’s something wonderfully hard to take seriously about a kitchen dance party.
Movement, music and play can help shift the mood when everyone is feeling wound up. With kids especially, meeting frustration with a little silliness can sometimes help break the tension.
So turn up a favourite song and get your groove on. Dignity is optional.
3. Take a breath
When life feels busy, slowing down your breathing can give you something simple to focus on.
You might try counting your breaths, taking a slow inhale followed by a longer exhale, or using a steady rhythm such as inhale, pause, exhale, pause.
Singing works too. A favourite song naturally encourages longer exhales, and belting it out in the car has the added benefit of being much more entertaining.
4. Get outside
Put the phone down for a while and head somewhere you can notice what’s around you.
Walk through the bush or along the water. Listen to the birds. Feel the breeze. Take the kids to the park, collect rocks, sticks or shells, or kick your shoes off and feel the grass or sand beneath your feet.
Sometimes the simplest way to get out of our heads is to pay attention to what’s happening right in front of us.
5. Combine them
This is where things get efficient.
A swim at the beach, followed by your favourite song on the drive home? Water, movement, nature and music all in one hit. Nicely done.
The next few months will probably be busy. There will be exciting moments, stressful moments and plenty of things competing for your attention.
A little preparation now can make a difference. Notice the times that tend to feel hectic, make space for small pauses where you can, and remember that busy seasons are temporary.
Your next calm moment might be closer than you think.
Possibly just one good song and a quick dip away.
